Diet Plateaus Hit Me Twice While Losing 15.6kg

Going from 90.9kg to 75.3kg with jump rope, my weight refused to budge for days at a time, twice. The first time it happened, I thought I was doing something wrong and got impatient. It turns out a plateau is a pretty normal part of losing weight. Today I want to cover why plateaus happen and what I actually changed to get past them.

Why the Body Hits a Plateau, in Plain Terms

Losing weight means burning more energy than you take in. But if that gap holds steady for a while, the body reads it as a shortage. In response, it lowers your resting metabolism to conserve energy. In plain terms, you can eat and move the same way you did before and still not create as big a deficit as you used to. This is called adaptive metabolism. It is not a bad sign. It is just the body trying to protect itself.

The First Plateau, Around Week 3

About three weeks into jump rope, the number on the scale did not move for over a week. Up to that point it had dropped a little almost every day, so the stall felt worse by comparison. I was still hungry, the workouts still felt hard, and the scale would not budge. That was the first time I actually wanted to quit. I did not know it was a plateau yet, so I just kept going for a few more days and hoped.

The Second Plateau, and What I Actually Changed

The second plateau showed up around week 9. This time I had been through it once, so I stayed calmer and checked four things instead. Instead of adding more jump rope reps, I raised the intensity of my intervals. I rebuilt my meals around protein first. I fixed my habit of staying up too late. And I put the scale aside for a while and started tracking my waist and arm with a tape measure instead. The scale was not moving, but the tape measure showed things were still changing, and that made it much easier to stay calm.

Getting Past It Did Not Fix Everything

Even after the second plateau broke, I still have stretches of a few days now and then where the number will not move. I do not panic the way I used to, but I have not become completely indifferent to it either. When a plateau shows up now, I do not overhaul everything. I just keep doing what I have been doing for a few more days, and if nothing changes, I check one thing at a time from there.

Wrapping Up

The first thing to do when a plateau hits is probably to stop reacting to every number on the scale. Once I understood it as the body’s natural way of conserving energy, I stopped panicking about it as much. If the scale has stalled for you, I would suggest checking a tape measure or how your clothes fit instead.
